Job Summary

The Secondary Division Literacy Coach will support all 6-12 staff in the implementation of Suffolk Public Schools Literacy Plan. This position works with the Coordinator of English Instruction (K-12) to build teacher capacity and understanding of the English/language arts curriculum and instructional practices aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with development and coordination of the division's literacy program.
  • Contribute to division-wide selection and development of curriculum resources aligned with VA Standards of Learning.
  • Serve as a resource to teachers and administrators to support ELL and Dyslexia instruction.
  • Monitor the instructional program provided by English/language arts classroom teachers and provide ongoing professional learning support and coaching using the SPS aligned coaching model to help teachers improve performance and achieve literacy-related objectives.
  • Support the instructional development of teachers as it relates to Tier I instruction, student engagement, classroom management, data review and use, and lesson plans.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or University.
  • Hold a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in English and/or Reading Specialist.
  • Minimum five years of successful teaching experience with at least three years of teaching Reading or English/Language arts at the appropriate grade level span.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree.
  • Instructional Leadership.
