Summary:

The Surgical Technology Specialist is responsible for preparing and maintaining a sterile environment for surgical interventions, ensuring the proper handling of instruments, and assisting the surgical team in accordance with established healthcare standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates effectively with the surgical team to facilitate operative procedures.
  • Proactively anticipates the needs of the surgeon during surgical operations.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in managing emergency situations.
  • Guarantees the sterility of all surgical supplies and instruments during preparation.
  • Handles surgical instruments in a manner that extends their usability.
  • Aids the circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Assists in the collection of necessary surgical supplies and equipment, ensuring accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Keeps physician preference cards current and accurate.
  • Ensures proper handling of specimens for pathology, confirming details with the surgeon.
  • Transports surgical equipment to designated cleaning areas and assists in the reprocessing of instrument sets.
  • Adheres to Standard Universal Precautions and employs safe practices to ensure personal and patient safety.
  • Participates in infection control and emergency preparedness initiatives.
  • Follows all safety protocols and demonstrates knowledgeable use of equipment.
  • Communicates professionally with patients, physicians, and healthcare staff, maintaining confidentiality as per policy.
  • Maintains required certifications, including Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Complies with all policies and procedures to ensure a safe working and patient care environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Technologist in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).


Education/Certification:
Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.

Must possess effective communication skills to collaborate with patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
