The Plastic Surgery Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and administrative support to ensure the efficient operation of the medical office.
Key Responsibilities- Obtain vital signs, patient health history, and accurate documentation of patient visits
- Assist the Physician during Examinations, Consults, and Procedures
- Review patient treatment plans, medications, and physician instructions to patients
- Comfort patients by anticipating their anxieties and answering questions
- Send Prescriptions to Pharmacies by electronic, fax or written form at the direction of the ordering physician
- Coordinate referrals for patients to specialists
- Call patients to relay advice and instructions from the surgeon
- Remove sutures and dressing as indicated by the surgeon; reapply dressings as needed
- Protect patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of medical, personal, and financial information
- Produce and distribute correspondence memos, letters, faxes, and forms
- Maintain inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing orders, and verifying receipt of supplies
- Provide leadership to others through example, training and sharing of knowledge/skill
- Prepare the operating facility and clean the room and instruments after each procedure
- Dispose of contaminated and disposable items, per OSHA guidelines
- Ensure proper sterilization techniques (OSHA standard) are used for instruments
- Keep supply room and operating room neat and well stocked
- Coordinate the maintenance scheduling/testing of the autoclave and other equipment used in the procedure room
- Complete paperwork when submitting pathologic specimens, and notify lab that a specimen needs to be picked up; verify patient insurance for the appropriate lab
- Sterile preparation and aseptic technique experience preferred
- Superior written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to exercise empathy when working with patients and their families
- Demonstrate an understanding of standard clinical procedures, laws and regulations
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA regulations, ICD, and CPT coding (highly advantageous)
- Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures
- Neat, professional appearance
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
- Critical thinking skills
- Meticulous attention to detail with the ability to multitask and prioritize work
- Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals
