Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team at Polk County, IA. As a Detention Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of inmates, as well as maintaining order and discipline within the jail facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the protection, welfare, and safety of inmates
  • Maintain control and internal security of the jail facility
  • Provide for the basic needs of inmates, including physical safety and well-being
  • Effectively apply positive or negative reinforcement for inmates who violate jail rules and regulations
  • Respond to emergency situations, including fires, medical emergencies, and altercations
  • Identify and report serious or life-threatening medical conditions
  • Administer basic first aid and life-saving aid as needed
  • Perform searches of inmates and inmate areas
  • Complete and maintain accurate records of jail activities and incidents
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be of good moral character
  • Must not have been convicted of a serious crime
  • Must be able to meet physical and psychological standards set forth by the County Sheriff and Jail Administration
  • Must be able to pass a background check and polygraph exam
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Iowa
Working Conditions

The Detention Officer will work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with frequent exposure to stress and emergency situations. The officer will be required to work varying shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
