Job Overview

As a Communications Specialist within the City of Hammond, you will engage in essential operations involving communication systems, record maintenance, and various responsibilities within the police department's communication center.

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties:

  • Manage incoming police calls, ensuring accurate information is gathered from callers regarding incidents.
  • Receive and document complaints from various sources, including police units and community members.
  • Determine the appropriate police units to dispatch based on departmental protocols.
  • Maintain continuous communication with police units, tracking their status and responding to requests for assistance.
  • Relay critical information, instructions, and messages from supervisors to the field units.
  • Coordinate with state police and other law enforcement agencies to exchange vital information.
  • Handle all incoming calls to the police department, directing them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain logs, records, and files, ensuring that all information is current and accessible.
  • Assist in training new communications personnel through demonstrations and supervision.
  • Prepare for shift transitions by sharing information with incoming staff and reviewing prior shift records.
Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Must comply with all stipulations of the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Law.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens and of legal age.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Valid identification is required.
  • Successful candidates must pass a physical examination prior to commencing employment.
