General Overview of the Role

As a Clinical Radiation Specialist, you will administer ionizing radiation to patients across all age groups, following the directives of the Radiation Oncologist and under the supervision of the Chief Therapist.

Key Responsibilities

*Accurately deliver the prescribed radiation therapy regimen with minimal oversight.

*Verify prescriptions, diagnoses, charts, and patient identities.

*Communicate the procedure to patients, including emergency protocols during treatment.

*Reinforce the Radiation Oncologist's guidance regarding treatment reactions and patient care.

*Prepare the treatment area and equipment according to the prescribed specifications, including immobilization devices and protective measures.

*Safely transfer patients to the treatment couch, ensuring care for any medical devices in use.

*Monitor treatment times and administer the prescribed radiation dose.

*Maintain communication with patients throughout the treatment process.

*Keep accurate patient markings and observe for any unusual reactions, reporting findings to nursing staff or the Radiation Oncologist.

*Adhere to radiation safety protocols for both patients and staff.

*Conduct simulations and assist in tumor localization and immobilization procedures.

*Support dosimetry tasks, including prescription calculations.

*Obtain weekly port films for review during chart rounds.

*Participate in weekly on-call rotations as required.

*Perform and document daily equipment warm-up and quality assurance procedures.

*Maintain accurate records of treatments and participate in departmental quality assurance initiatives.

*Manage inventory and secure necessary supplies.

*Collect x-ray and laboratory reports as needed.

*Report any equipment malfunctions to the Chief Radiation Therapist or relevant personnel.

*Engage in departmental performance improvement activities.

*Assist in the onboarding and training of new staff members.

*Attend regular quality assurance meetings and educational sessions.

*Incorporate departmental and hospital policies into patient care practices.

Qualifications

Education: Completion of a 24-month program in radiology technology and a 12-month program in radiation therapy technology; or completion of a 24-month program in radiation therapy technology; or a registered nurse with a completed 12-month radiation therapy program; or a Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy.

Experience: One year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.

Licensure and Certification: Current licensure as mandated by state or national regulations and/or certification or eligibility for certification in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology. Maintain ARRT certification with a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proficient understanding of the principles and procedures related to the operation of ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment. Knowledge of human anatomy and patient positioning for effective treatment delivery. Ability to perform CPR in emergency situations.
