Position Overview:
This role is situated within the Orthotics and Prosthetics Central Fabrication Laboratory, dedicated to serving the needs of veterans.
Key Responsibilities:
This position involves the continuous recruitment of qualified candidates to fill openings as they arise. The technician will be responsible for the fabrication, modification, and repair of a diverse array of custom prosthetic and orthotic devices. Under the guidance of a Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist, the technician will work with advanced technologies, including myoelectric prostheses and microprocessor knees.
Specific Duties Include:
- Fabricating custom prosthetic and orthotic devices, which encompasses plaster modifications, preparation of positive models, and forming plastic materials through blister and drape techniques.
- Executing lamination processes using acrylic resins and carbon fiber materials, as well as cutting, trimming, and finishing products to ensure proper fitting for patients.
- Adjusting and repairing all custom devices, which includes performing bench alignment procedures and ensuring proper placement of ankle and knee components.
- Selecting appropriate materials based on patient diagnoses and entering prosthetic requests for component purchases in accordance with medical prescriptions.
Documentation and Maintenance:
- Accurately documenting workload and procedure coding as part of materials management.
- Maintaining lab equipment and ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
- Managing inventory levels of fabrication supplies, ensuring they do not exceed a thirty-day supply, and requisitioning materials as necessary.
Work Schedule:
This position typically follows a Monday to Friday schedule, with standard working hours.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess proficiency in basic written and spoken English, along with specialized experience equivalent to the GS 7 level in the Federal service. This experience should demonstrate the ability to perform the duties outlined, including fabricating and repairing custom devices and maintaining lab equipment.
Certification:
Certification from the American Board for Certification (ABC) as a Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Technician is required or must be obtained upon selection.
Physical Requirements:
The role necessitates extensive periods of standing and walking, along with regular bending, lifting, and carrying of supplies. The technician must be capable of working with machinery essential for fabricating custom devices.
