Job Purpose

The Associate Counsel is an in-house legal position with a professional service firm providing common business services to a select group of national, sophisticated design and construction professional firms. The Associate Counsel will join the in-house Legal and Risk Management team to provide legal and business advice related to contracts, practice management, claims, insurance, and other legal matters.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice and risk assessments across a broad range of legal matters related to design professional services and construction law.
  • Analyze, summarize, and advise on a wide variety of commercial contracts.
  • Draft and negotiate professional services agreements, nondisclosure agreements, marketing agreements, joint venture agreements, and data sharing agreements.
  • Conduct and compile research, legislative updates, and maintain/update legal due diligence documents.
  • Collaborate with in-house, outside legal counsel, and cross-functional teams in the management and resolution of contested matters and demands.
  • Provide support for intellectual property and brand protection matters, including interpreting and translating privacy laws, copyright, and trademark law.
  • Provide support on labor and employment matters.
  • Perform legal research and draft, review memorandums and communications.
  • Deliver education to those with a non-legal background on various legal topics, including project-specific requirements, contracts, ethics, and compliance.
  • Capture industry and market trends to advise on best practices, continuously improve processes, and proactively mitigate risk.
Qualifications

  • Admitted to Practice Law in the State of Wisconsin
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the following areas are a plus:
  • Construction-Related Litigation
  • Transactional Design and Construction Matters
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Risk Management
  • Professional Liability and General Liability Insurance Matters
  • Corporate Licensing
  • State and Federal Contracts
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Self-motivated with ability to manage numerous assignments simultaneously and prioritize work.
  • Excellent communication skills including drafting professional e-mail and letter communications to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Interest in working in a collaborative environment across departments and with a priorities of client service, high performance, and integrity.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
  • Work is performed in a remote-office hybrid environment
  • No or very limited physical effort is required
