Job Description

The State Office of Risk Management (SORM) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Accountant to join our team. As a key member of our Financial Management department, you will play a crucial role in preparing financial statements, records, documents, and reports. Your expertise will be utilized to reconcile claims fund activity, identify discrepancies, analyze fund balances and expenditures, and assist with important legislative reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with daily production and mail processing
  • Prepare expenditure/cash flow reports
  • Respond to phone and email requests
  • Prepare accounting entries and documents for transactions related to disbursements in all accounts necessary
  • Process refunds and/or other accounts payable entries in the CAPPS accounting system
  • Research and reconcile revenue transactions
  • Complete detailed assignments in recording, classifying, examining, and verifying financial records, documents, or reports
  • Input accounting entries into CAPPS
  • Recommend improvements, adaptations, or revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures, as needed
  • Verify data entered into the cash receipt system and assign program codes. Process reversals and code corrections
  • Keep management appropriately informed of ongoing activity and critical matters affecting the operations and well-being of the agency
  • Actively participate in independent job-related research and demonstrate initiative when seeking solutions to issues
  • Provide customer service, as needed
  • Perform related work as assigned
  • Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Attend work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Requirements
  • Two – years of full-time experience in accounting, finance, procurement, or closely related field
  • Two or more years of Microsoft experience
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems
  • Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of accounting
  • Knowledge of or experience with accounting software such as CAPPS, USAS, and MS Excel
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and administration
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Knowledge of and experience with State of Texas payment processing
  • Skill in utilizing a PC, associated software, calculator, or ten-key machine
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to interpret and analyze complex financial documents and reports
  • Ability to work accurately with numerical details in a high-volume setting
  • Ability to prepare a variety of financial statements, reports, and analyzes
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, and external clients
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently in dependable, organized and productive manner in order to arrange workload plans to meet schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
  • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in accounting, finance, business, or related field
  • Experience with automated accounting systems and applications such as Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS), Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN)Centralized Accounting Payroll/Personnel System (CAPPS)
  • Knowledge in State of Texas accounting rules and regulations
