JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


The Energy Science and Power Systems (ESPS) Division of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is looking for a Power and Energy Systems Engineer to engage in fundamental and applied research that supports ARL's mission of enhancing national security through the design and development of innovative undersea power and energy solutions.

The successful candidate will become part of a diverse team tasked with the analysis, design, development, and demonstration of cutting-edge power systems for underwater and other specialized applications, including combustion/thermal, electrochemical, and hybrid systems.

This role can be filled by either a Research and Development (R&D) Engineer or Research Faculty (non-tenure).

ARL is a recognized DoD SkillBridge partner and encourages all transitioning military personnel to apply.

Your Responsibilities:
1. Model, design, fabricate, and test components, subsystems, and integrated systems.
2. Evaluate, manufacture, and test energetic materials utilized in underwater power systems and/or chemical storage of hydrogen or oxygen.
3. Lead technical projects, interfacing with internal management, program sponsors, and other stakeholders.
4. Develop innovative ideas and proposals for potential new programs.

This position can be filled at various levels based on the candidate's qualifications, education, and experience. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline and 5+ years of relevant experience is required. A Master of Science (MS) degree or Doctorate (PhD) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field is preferred.
Required Skills:
The ideal candidate should possess a robust technical background with experience in the design and analysis of chemical, mechanical, and/or electrical systems.

Experience with modeling and hands-on testing of materials, subsystems, and systems is essential.

Strong writing skills for white papers/proposals and the ability to present effectively to large groups and sponsors are necessary.

A proven track record of successful project and team leadership is expected.

Preferred Skills:
Proficiency with modeling tools for chemical kinetics, phase equilibria, thermodynamics, or other analytical tools is advantageous.

Familiarity with materials related to the chemical generation and storage of hydrogen and oxygen is preferred.

Experience in securing funding from various agencies, including but not limited to the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and SBIR/STTR is beneficial.

Your working location will be on-site in State College, PA.
