POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the direction of a Teacher Licensing Supervisor or their delegate, the Head Start Teacher is tasked with ensuring student advancement as outlined in the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework. This role necessitates the demonstration of essential skills required to effectively execute curriculum, design and lead high-quality educational activities, and cultivate a stimulating and secure learning atmosphere where children can build a solid foundation for school readiness and future academic success. The assignment is structured for the academic year with designated breaks as determined by program needs and the site calendar.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Child Development, Health, and Safety

1. Designs and implements a tailored bilingual, multicultural curriculum that fosters the intellectual and physical growth of children, enhancing their readiness for school.

2. Supports children in developing literacy, phonemic awareness, and print recognition; understanding and utilizing their primary language with an expanding vocabulary; fostering a love for reading; and grasping early math and science concepts.

3. Establishes and maintains a welcoming, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment that promotes cognitive, language, social/emotional, and physical development for children and their families.

4. Addresses the unique needs of each child by creating an environment conducive to the inclusion of children with special needs and those who speak a home language other than English.

5. Effectively engages with children with disabilities and their families, making necessary adaptations to meet the goals outlined in the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

6. Models proper English grammar for all children, particularly those acquiring English as a second language, to facilitate language development.

7. Translates and interprets daily activities and events into the child's home language and employs additional strategies to ensure understanding and support dual language acquisition.

8. Conducts developmental and social/emotional screenings within 45 days of enrollment and accurately documents required health information.

9. Performs ongoing assessments in accordance with program guidelines to identify proficiencies, strengths, potential concerns, and/or delays by monitoring children's progress through necessary observations.

10. Utilizes information from screenings, assessments, observations, and parental input to set individualized goals and plan learning activities for children.

11. Develops lesson plans that incorporate at least one (1) home task and one (1) food experience each month.

12. Adheres to specialized physical health care procedures and provides first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed.

13. Implements approved emergency protocols and documents monthly fire drills.

14. Complies with all Child/Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines and maintains daily, weekly, and monthly food service documentation and reporting.

Family Engagement

1. Fosters positive relationships with parents/guardians and promotes family involvement in center activities.

2. Implements the Strong Fathers Strong Families (SFSF) curriculum, encouraging fathers and male guardians to engage in their children's education through participation in center activities.

3. Conducts two (2) parent conferences and two (2) educational home visits for each child assigned to the classroom annually to strengthen the home-school connection and support family growth and development.

4. Maintains awareness of and collaborates with community-based organizations and service agencies to facilitate parent conferences and meetings.

5. Advocates for participant families, connecting them with necessary community services and resources.

6. Provides families with information about community organizations and events, encouraging their participation and further involvement in community activities to foster advocacy and leadership among parents.

7. Involves parents in planning Parent Center Committee meetings and collaborates with the Family Support Specialist (FSS) to facilitate these meetings.

8. Assesses the needs and interests of participant families and organizes parent education activities accordingly.

Teamwork, Communication, and Professional Standards

1. Maintains effective communication with supervisors, managers, other Head Start staff, and parents to provide services and fulfill job responsibilities.

2. Collaborates with other Head Start staff to enhance parent participation in program activities and ensures parents are informed about the various options available for involvement in Head Start.

3. Understands the Mandated Reporter Laws and recognizes the importance of reporting any concerns regarding children and suspicions of abuse or neglect to their supervisor/manager.

4. Demonstrates reliability by arriving on time, maintaining consistent attendance, and adhering to program procedures when absent.

5. Takes responsibility for contributing to the planning and achievement of team goals and objectives.

6. Engages in continuous self-assessment and evaluation of program services.

7. Exhibits adaptability to changing needs, problem-solving abilities, and the incorporation of innovations to meet program requirements and enhance services.

8. Completes detailed paperwork accurately and submits all required documentation and reports within established timelines.

9. Upholds confidentiality of personal information and the integrity of record-keeping processes.

10. Participates in professional development activities, including training sessions and meetings as required.

11. Identifies personal training needs to fulfill professional development requirements and foster individual growth.

12. Supports and assists colleagues in completing their work activities as needed.

13. May be called upon to serve as a substitute in another classroom or site to ensure uninterrupted service delivery to children and families as program needs arise.

14. Conducts monthly inventory and orders necessary supplies.

15. Promotes a commitment to excellence and continuous quality improvement to ensure the highest quality of services for children, families, and staff.

16. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To successfully perform this role, an individual must be capable of executing each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Knowledge

1. Understanding of child development theory, particularly early childhood development.

2. Knowledge of the educational structures necessary for coordinating and delivering a developmentally appropriate early education program.

3. Familiarity with Head Start standards, requirements, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

4. Strategies to engage children and parents in program activities.

5. Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences within the community, program, and agency.

6. Techniques for accurate record-keeping and data management.

7. Knowledge of community resources and available support services.

8. Understanding of the Head Start Act and Performance Standards is preferred.
