Position Overview:


The Respiratory Care Practitioner III is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating respiratory therapy services and life support for patients across various departments, including neonatal intensive care. This role operates under the guidance of a physician and adheres to prescribed protocols.

The practitioner will also engage in additional patient comfort activities to ensure seamless patient care delivery.

The scope of care encompasses life support services, oxygen therapy, medical gas administration, pharmaceutical interventions, and chest physiotherapy, among others.

Adhere to Kaiser Permanente's policies, principles of responsibility, and relevant laws at all levels.

Uphold the Patient Bill of Rights and demonstrate respect and dignity towards patients and colleagues.


Ensure confidentiality regarding patient and employee medical records and communications.


Welcome patients courteously, addressing them by their appropriate titles and surnames.


Telephone Etiquette:
Follow departmental guidelines for courteous communication during phone interactions.


Document essential details during calls, including patient name, contact number, call reason, and urgency.


Relay urgent messages promptly to the designated provider.

RESPIRATORY CARE PRACTITIONER III DUTIES

Exhibit knowledge and competency in addressing the needs of patients across all age groups: neonatal, pediatric, and adult.

Patient Care and Service:
Provide proficient direct and indirect care to diverse patient populations.

Actively participate in patient care rounds as a critical member of the healthcare team.

Understand the admitting diagnosis and pulmonary conditions of assigned patients, conducting thorough assessments and delivering appropriate therapies.

Monitor and evaluate patient responses to respiratory interventions, documenting findings in accordance with departmental protocols.


Assess the suitability of respiratory care services, considering the unique needs of various age groups and cognitive abilities.

Initiate routine orders within established departmental timelines.

Adjust airway cuff pressures as necessary.

Advise on diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to physicians and nursing staff.


Modify treatment techniques based on patient age and development while keeping the healthcare team informed.

Utilize the appropriate chain-of-command for consultations on patients not responding to standard therapies.

Conduct respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Communicate mechanisms of action, dosages, contraindications, and potential adverse reactions for medications when requested.

Secure approval before administering any non-standard medications.

Store unused medication doses per guidelines.

Provide ventilatory support during patient transfers within the facility.

May participate in specialized transport teams for pediatric and neonatal patients as required.

Adhere to infection control protocols and perform necessary disinfection and sterilization procedures.


Practice hand hygiene consistently and follow isolation procedures as indicated.

Maintain universal precautions at all times.

Conduct blood gas analyses, ensuring quality control and adherence to laboratory standards.

Document and report critical blood gas values to the appropriate healthcare team members.

Perform maintenance and quality control checks on blood gas analyzers.

Respond to emergencies across all departments, demonstrating proficiency in Basic Life Support and advanced resuscitation techniques.

Assess lung function to ensure proper endotracheal tube placement and optimize treatment positioning for patients.

Collaborate with healthcare providers regarding suctioning frequency and other care recommendations.

Engage in problem-solving processes to address patient care challenges.

Comply with patient safety protocols and take necessary precautions based on patient age and development.

Documentation:
Ensure timely and accurate record-keeping in line with departmental policies.

Maintain comprehensive documentation of departmental workload.

Assume responsibility for all required respiratory care documentation for assigned patients.

Equipment Management:
Effectively utilize and maintain respiratory care equipment and supplies.


Demonstrate the ability to set up, operate, troubleshoot, and perform corrective actions on equipment as per departmental and manufacturer guidelines.

Report any malfunctioning equipment promptly.

Assess equipment failures for potential risks to patient safety.

Maintain inventory levels of respiratory care supplies as assigned.

Time Management:
Meet departmental standards for documentation and report any challenges in completing procedures.

Professional Development:
Demonstrate adaptability and support departmental changes while functioning independently.

Communication Skills:
Employ effective listening and communication skills in all interactions.

Utilize the chain-of-command for addressing complex situations.

Report critical values to the appropriate team members immediately.

Engage professionally with healthcare team members regarding patient care plans.

Education and Training:
Participate in the orientation of new staff and contribute to patient education initiatives.

Attend continuing education sessions and departmental meetings as required.


RCP III encompasses all skills of RCP I and RCP II, functioning independently in critical care settings.

Demonstrate the ability to assess and manage mechanical ventilation in adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients as applicable.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience

A minimum of one year of recent experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the past year.

Demonstrated ability to function independently in various critical care environments.


Education

Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Care program.

License, Certification, Registration

Valid Respiratory Care Practitioner License (California) and relevant certifications.

Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in S.T.A.B.L.E. and two years of recent experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Additional Notes:
Must possess RRT and RCP III credentials, with independent functioning in critical care settings.
