Position Overview:
The Lead Surgical Technologist at UPMC Hamot plays a crucial role in facilitating the assignments of Surgical Technologists under supervision to ensure safe and effective surgical procedures. This position involves assisting with complex surgeries across various specialties, arranging sterile setups, passing instruments, and preparing necessary supplies.

Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate day-to-day supervision of surgical technicians.
- Serve as the lead on shifts to address questions or issues.
- Assist Nurse Specialist in overseeing the use of supplies and equipment for patient care and safety.
- Ensure all medications are properly labeled and handed to the surgeon in accordance with established policies.
- Demonstrate initiative in resolving patient and technical issues to enhance OR operations.
- Act as a liaison with Sterile Processing.
- Present one in-service training annually under the direction of the Clinician.
- Serve as a resource for other staff members and mentor students and new employees.

During Surgical Procedures:
- Pass instruments, hold retractors, cut sutures, sponge or suction the surgical site, and assist in counting sponges, needles, and instruments.
- After surgery, assist in transferring patients to the recovery room and ensure the operating room is cleaned and restocked.

Preparation for Surgery:
- Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
- Support cost containment in the use of materials and equipment.
- Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens for laboratory analysis; assist in applying dressings.
- Set up the operating room prior to surgery, including surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.

Qualifications:
- A minimum of 4 years of Operating Room experience is required.
- Completion of a formal surgical technician program from an accredited institution.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC) is mandatory.
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting certification with renewal within 90 days of hire or transfer.
