Key Responsibilities:
A Cytology Specialist I is responsible for conducting cytological procedures and examinations, as well as performing related tests. This role includes maintaining laboratory equipment and records, along with executing quality assurance activities pertinent to examination performance, all while exercising independent judgment and accountability as dictated by departmental standards.
The Cytology Specialist delivers timely and precise laboratory test results on cytological specimens to healthcare providers and internal departments. Responsibilities include:
- Preparing samples for examination and conducting tests in accordance with established protocols.
- Utilizing knowledge of testing theory and technical aspects to effectively troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Performing and validating cytological tests on acceptable specimens to ensure accurate data is obtained in line with established procedures.
- Conducting microscopic screenings of cytological specimens within designated turnaround times, using the laboratory information system as necessary.
- Overseeing the work of cytopreparatory technicians.
- Preparing slides from acceptable specimens for microscopic analysis and executing manual and automated staining procedures in a timely manner.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents, and necessary documentation.
- Adhering to all institutional and departmental policies and procedures while executing quality control processes.
- Understanding the roles and responsibilities of team members to promote quality healthcare delivery.
- Ensuring a clean and organized work environment.
- Performing additional duties within the scope of practice as required.
Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Cytotechnology from an accredited program or equivalent military training accepted by the NYS Education Department for licensing purposes is required.
Experience: Familiarity with standard laboratory methodologies is essential; prior clinical laboratory experience is preferred.
Licensure/Certificates: A valid Cytotechnologist License is mandatory.
Skills: Attention to detail, accuracy, critical thinking, accountability, technical proficiency, and laboratory skills are crucial.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves sedentary work, which may include:
- Exerting up to 10 lbs of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Occasional crouching, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, stooping, and walking.
- Frequent typing, clerical tasks, dexterity, grasping, hearing, repetitive motion, seeing, talking, and visual acuity.
Hazards:
Exposure to bodily fluids and bloodborne pathogens is frequent, along with chemical exposure.
Travel:
No travel is required for this position.

Compensation:
The salary for this role is influenced by various factors, including qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and market evaluation based on industry standards. The compensation range reflects a good faith estimate by Bassett Healthcare Network at the time of this posting.
Pay Range:
Minimum: USD $34.64/Hr
Maximum: USD $51.95/Hr
