Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of mechanical equipment at our water reclamation plants, pumping stations, and sludge disposal facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment, including pumps, blowers, turbines, and boilers, to ensure efficient and safe plant operations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment to identify potential issues and take corrective action to prevent downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Record and report meter, gauge, and instrument readings, as well as maintain accurate operating logs and records.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and develop solutions to improve plant operations.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives to improve operational processes and efficiency.
Requirements
  • Must possess a City of Chicago Stationary Engineer's License.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, and three years of experience in pertinent operating work.
  • Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Working Conditions

May involve exposure to loud noise, noxious odors, and varying weather conditions. May require working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, and related electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical malfunctions of equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of measuring and testing devices connected with plant operations.
