Role Responsibilities:
Job Summary:
The Emergency Services Technician (EST) plays a vital role in supporting the professional nursing staff in delivering patient care, facilitating patient transport, preparing and maintaining patient rooms, and managing inventory of supplies. The EST may have patient care assignments based on unit requirements and the professional nurse's discretion.
Key Responsibilities:
Assists in patient care by supporting the professional nurse in various activities:
- Provides emergency assistance to patients in the emergency department by monitoring vital signs.
- Supports patient care as directed by RN, which may include point of care testing, IV-line setup, discontinuation of IV, enema, suture removal, restraint application, catheterization, and 12 lead EKG.
- Transports patients using wheelchairs and carts.
- Assists with the application of casts, crutches, immobilizers, and splints.
- Helps patients with mobility and positioning.
- Transports medical samples under RN direction, including blood and urine samples.
- Assists medical staff during procedures and specimen collection by adhering to proper techniques.
- Communicates patient and family observations and concerns to the RN.
- Responds promptly to patient requests and call lights.
- Maintains patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Adapts tasks according to patient age and developmental needs.
- Follows established procedures diligently.
- Assists in resuscitation efforts using appropriate CPR techniques and bag/valve mask.
- Ensures patient safety and informs RN of observations.
- Documents patient care activities accurately and timely in nursing records.
- Collaborates with charge nurse to coordinate scheduling of tests, lab work, and clinical appointments.
Maintaining Room and Supplies:
- Restocks rooms, supplies, carts, and oxygen tanks.
- Assists with cleaning patient rooms between visits.
- Completes room and cart checklists.
Quality Control Responsibilities:
- Conducts quality control checks on designated equipment.
- Reports any discrepancies or malfunctions to the RN.
- Transports medications as needed within the emergency department.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization in nursing station areas.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers): Certification required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
AND ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:
- Current EMT or ERT certification: Required upon hire.
- Current Paramedic Certification: Required upon hire.
- Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry: Required upon hire.
- Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program: Completion of one semester of clinical rotation.
- Six months of recent direct patient care experience: In an acute care, long-term care, or home care setting.
- Successful completion of Fairview's OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program.
- LPN licensure upon hire: This licensure does not need to be maintained throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience:
- Previous Emergency Room experience: 1 or more years in relevant roles.
- Current CNA or NST experience: 1 or more years.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Paramedic, EMT, ERT, LPN, CNA, PCA.
