Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is seeking an experienced Employment Lawyer to join our Office of the General Counsel. As a key member of our team, you will provide strategic legal advice on employment risks and remedies, as well as all aspects of the employment life cycle and employment matters in the United States jurisdictions in which the firm operates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Employment Law Strategies: Collaborate with the General Counsel team to develop and implement employment law strategies that align with the firm's global business objectives, core values, and inclusive work culture.
  • Provide Legal Advice: Offer guidance and support on a full range of employment-related matters, including hiring, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, payroll and benefits compliance, personnel performance and behavior, workplace complaints, discrimination, retaliation, and harassment.
  • Review and Ensure Compliance: Regularly review and ensure that employment-related firm policies, procedures, contracts, and other documents comply with local laws and regulations, and manage employment-related risks.
  • Investigate Employment Claims: Support investigations of employment-related claims by developing investigation plans, drafting interview outlines, reviewing relevant files, summarizing evidence, interviewing witnesses as needed, and writing investigation reports.
  • Advise on Performance Improvement Plans: Collaborate with the Human Resources and Legal Personnel departments to develop performance improvement plans (PIPs) that comply with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Manage Employment Disputes: Lead or participate in disciplinary and employment termination meetings, and manage outside counsel's representation of the firm and its employees in employment disputes, litigation, and arbitration.
  • Oversee Compliance Matters: Advise on and oversee employment law-related compliance matters and responses to audits and legal information requests by regulatory authorities, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Labor, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Provide Consultative Advice: Collaborate with the Human Resources department and external counsel and consultants to provide consultative advice and guidance on cross-border employment matters, such as immigration, mobility, and expatriation procedures and compliance.
  • Support Onboarding and Training: Support the onboarding of external consultants and contractors hired by the firm, including overseeing periodic reviews of the terms and conditions of their engagements, ensuring compliance with employment law, data protection, and confidentiality obligations.
  • Provide Whistleblowing and Health and Safety Guidance: Offer legal advice and guidance on whistleblowing activities and health and safety issues.
  • Stay Up-to-Date on Employment Law: Understand and remain up-to-date on the employment regulatory frameworks the firm operates in globally and nationally within the U.S., particularly for developments in Washington, D.C., New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, and California, and recommend legal strategies to minimize risk and ensure compliance.
  • Recommend Training and Updates: Recommend, design, and deliver training and updates to the firm's management and employees.
  • Engage and Evaluate External Counsel: Collaborate with the Human Resources department to engage, evaluate, and manage external employment counsel in United States jurisdictions where the firm operates, serving as the primary point of contact.
  • Support Other Legal Matters: Support the Office of General Counsel, the Human Resources department, and other firm departments in other legal matters as requested, such as corporate governance, risk management, and ethics.
Qualifications
  • Law Degree Required: Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP requires a law degree for this position.
  • Minimum 8 Years of Experience: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8 years of experience practicing employment law, preferably in a large law firm and in-house legal department.
  • Admitted to Practice Law: The candidate must be admitted to practice law in a U.S. state where the firm has an office.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Federal and State Employment Law: The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with U.S. federal and state employment law, preferably in New York, the District of Columbia, or Texas, including working knowledge of various employment laws, including the ADA, FMLA, Title VII, and FLSA.
  • Excellent Communication and Drafting Skills: The candidate must be able to provide clear, succinct, confident, and commercial advice, written and verbal, on complex issues.
  • Strong Analytical and Organizational Skills: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated high-level professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a proactive and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
  • Working Knowledge of Data Collection Procedures: The candidate must have a working knowledge of data collection procedures and data analysis techniques.
