General Overview:
Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse/Charge Nurse, the Patient Safety Coordinator (PSC) is tasked with continuous in-person monitoring, therapeutic interaction, and addressing the immediate safety requirements of patients by observing them either in their rooms or through remote monitoring systems at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
Under the direct oversight of the RN, the PSC will deliver direct observation of patients to foster a safer environment.
Monitors patients for unsafe actions, such as tampering with lines, drains, and tubes, attempting to leave the bed without assistance, or exhibiting self-harm tendencies.
Employs therapeutic dialogue, reorientation techniques, distraction methods, and strategies to redirect patients with courtesy, respect, patience, and understanding.The PSC will provide updates and reports regarding patient status, including relaying any indications of self-harm or harm to others to the nursing staff.
In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, specific interventions and objectives will be established for each patient. Any inquiries regarding the patient should be directed to the nurse or physician.The PSC assists patients with daily living activities, including meal service, feeding as necessary, ambulating, repositioning, and ensuring hydration between meals; also responsible for emptying waste containers.
After meals, the PSC will tidy the dining area, covering items and placing them by the door for collection.
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) functioning as PSCs will provide routine care as outlined in the CNA job description.Responsible for maintaining cleanliness in the patient's room and bathroom - assists the Hospitality Services Department by organizing the patient room during shifts (removing trash, arranging furniture, and organizing counters and tables with patient input).
Actively contributes to creating a healing environment by maintaining a quiet atmosphere in and around the patient’s room at all times.
Assists with ambulation as requested.Adheres to Patient Safety Coordinator guidelines as established.
Safeguards the organization’s integrity by maintaining patient confidentiality.
Familiar with fire, disaster, and safety protocols relevant to the work area.
Performs similar or related duties as assigned, including but not limited to patient care activities as specified in Patient Safety Coordinator Guidelines.
Requirements:
Formal Education:
High School Diploma/GED preferred.
Work Experience:
No prior experience required.
Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
Completion of Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Responder course during Orientation, with renewal every six months.
