Job Summary

Sales associates at the Navy Exchange work as part of a sales team to provide exceptional customer service and exceed customer expectations. They are responsible for selling general merchandise to customers, exercising professional selling techniques, and ensuring the full operation of the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Customer Service
    • Greets and engages customers in conversation to provide sales-related assistance.
    • Assists customers in selecting merchandise and suggests additional items to complement their selections.
    • Offers customers the opportunity to purchase extended product warranties and explains coverage benefits and price.
  • Product Knowledge
    • Becomes knowledgeable about merchandise, including proper set-up, use, care, characteristics, and price points.
    • Communicates product-related information to customers knowledgeably and legibly.
  • Store Operations
    • Ensures assigned areas are fully stocked and merchandise is neatly arranged.
    • Communicates with supervisors, store managers, and other team members regarding stock additions, deletions, fast and slow-selling merchandise, customer preferences, and needs.
    • Participates in department meetings and actively seeks to exchange ideas regarding improvements in customer service, job performance, and achievement of store department sales goals.
  • Cash Handling
    • Completes sales transactions efficiently and thanks customers for their patronage.
    • Performs cash register transactions, including cash, charge, check, gift certificates, and layaway, in an accurate and procedurally correct manner.
  • Marketing and Promotion
    • Advises customers of upcoming sales events and services available throughout the Navy Exchange.
    • Offers customers the opportunity to open a NEXCARD account and informs customers of NEXCARD account benefits.
  • Store Policies and Procedures
    • Becomes knowledgeable in NEX store policies, including Richter Merchandising System functions and operation, merchandise returns, price matching, check cashing, and rain checks.
    • Handles customer returns and problems tactfully and efficiently, applying store policies consistently and intelligently to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Security and Loss Prevention
    • Maintains a high level of awareness in assigned areas and offers excellent customer service to all patrons, internal and external, to deter theft.
  • Inventory Management
    • Unpacks, stages, and moves merchandise as assigned.
    • Assists in creating store displays and performing periodic inventories.
  • Administrative Tasks
    • Completes paperwork associated with merchandise inventory movement, price adjustments, customer returns, and cash register operation accurately and completely.
  • Commission and Gainsharing
    • Eligible for and participates in applicable commission and gainsharing sales incentive programs.
  • Physical Demands
    • Required to lift up to 25 lbs. as it relates to job duties, including assisting customers, lifting merchandise, and assisting with stocking sales areas as necessary.
Additional Responsibilities
  • May be required to perform all or any combination of the following:
    • Open and close the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar.
    • Ensure all equipment is turned on during opening and turned off during closing.
    • Preheat and display products in heated display merchandisers.
    • Ensure sufficient goods and products are readily available for customers by replenishing products and condiments.
    • Ensure all products remaining at the close of business are time-dated when placed in the refrigerator.
    • Ensure cleaning of small wares and equipment throughout the day and at closing.
    • Monitor the temperature on refrigerators and freezers a minimum of 3 times daily.
    • May be required to attend a 4-hour food safety training session initially and an annual refresher thereafter.

This position is represented by the National Association of Government Employees, R4-123.

No experience required. High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
