Job Summary:

Under the supervision and control of a licensed physician pathologist, assists in the performance of anatomic pathology practice by:

  • Preparing and examining surgical pathology specimens.
  • Performing postmortem dissection with written description and preparation of tissue sections.
  • Performing other procedures related to pathologists' duties.
  • Performing other technical, supervisory, and/or functional direction duties within the scope of practice as directed by the pathologists or Chief Pathologist.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct postmortem examinations and provide detailed descriptions.
  • Process surgical pathology specimens, including dissection, description, and embedding for pathologists' diagnosis.
  • Prepare fine needle aspiration specimens.
  • Prepare frozen sections for pathologists' interpretation.
  • Ensure quality control and management of equipment and supplies in the surgical pathology laboratory and autopsy suite.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and projects for the Pathology Department.
  • Adhere to standards of practice, policies, and procedures as contained in the Department's Policy and Procedure Manuals in the surgical pathology and autopsy service.
  • Engage in continued education and skills assessment concurrent with established and new practices and techniques as applicable in surgical and autopsy pathology.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited pathologists' assistant training program and/or a current Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Pathologist's Assistant Certificate from the American Society for Clinical Pathologists.
  • Maintain Fellowship and/or National Certification of Pathologists Assistants as long as employed in this position.
  • Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in a Pathology Department.
  • Masters degree.
