Position Overview

This role encompasses a diverse array of administrative, educational, research, and clinical responsibilities vital to the advancement and functioning of the Department's Geriatrics initiative.

Moreover, this position collaborates closely with the Residency Program Director to enhance educational activities pertinent to the Springfield Family Medicine Residency Program.


Key Responsibilities

EDUCATION (20%)
A. Oversee residents and medical students during patient care activities at the Center for Family Medicine. B. Conduct educational rounds on hospitalized patients. C.

Deliver instruction and exemplification to fellows, residents, and medical students on the principles, advantages, and core concepts of interdisciplinary team care for elderly patients with intricate needs.

D. Collaborate with geriatric interdisciplinary team members to establish key outcomes anticipated from interdisciplinary care (e.g., maintenance of function, reduced falls and delirium, fewer unnecessary procedures, decreased length of stay, fewer readmissions within 30 days, enhanced patient and family satisfaction, infection control, etc.). E.

Actively mentor as a teaching physician in the resident outpatient clinics, encompassing patient care aspects, procedural skills, time management, doctor-patient relationships, professionalism, ethical and legal considerations, billing, and coding.

F. Lay the groundwork for a potential Geriatric Fellowship Program.

CLINICAL SERVICE (45%)
A. Act as Consultant for Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine referral clinic and the Geriatric Interdisciplinary Assessment clinic. B. Engage in specialized clinics such as the Frailty Clinic, Falls Clinic, Bone Density Clinic, etc. C. Participate in teaching service rounds at least five weeks annually and family medicine call. D. Conduct nursing home rounds with residents and engage in assisted living rounds with the Geriatric team as necessary. E. Provide emergency services to patients as required, including those without a primary care physician.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (20%)
A. Assume the role of Director of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine. B. Manage the Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Programs and establish priorities for providers and staff assigned to these programs. C. Collaborate with the Geriatric Team to oversee all Geriatric curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation. D. Propose policies and procedures along with quality control measures for the Geriatric Program. E. Work jointly with affiliated hospitals and the Department of Internal Medicine to enhance Geriatric programs and services. F. Serve as Director of Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine for the Springfield site. G. Collaborate with the Geriatric Team to oversee all Geriatric and Palliative Care curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation. H. Act as Medical Director for affiliated nursing homes. I. Identify, implement, and exemplify "best practices" in the field of Geriatric medicine. J. Supervise the advanced practice professionals and staff within the Geriatric Program.

RESEARCH (10%)
A. Contribute to the identification and execution of relevant research projects and publications in the fields of Geriatrics, Palliative Medicine, and Clinical Epidemiology. B. In accordance with RRC requirements, complete a minimum of two scholarly activities every five years.

PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT (5%)
A. Attend and present at national professional meetings. B. Participate in Center-wide Committees as assigned. C. Engage in school and department committees as assigned. D. Contribute to community outreach initiatives. E. Attend faculty meetings and resident conferences. F. Participate in Center Peer Review and Quality Improvement activities.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional Medical Degree or foreign equivalent. 2. Board certification in Family Medicine at time of hire 3. Licensure to practice medicine in the State of Illinois 4. Current certification in Geriatrics from ABFM. 5. Must be sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
