Position Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Laboratory Point of Care Supervisor is tasked with overseeing the laboratory Point of Care program, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, policies, and the TCRHCC commitment to delivering quality patient care. The Point of Care program encompasses laboratory tests categorized under the Waived and Provider Performed Microscopy (PPMP) sections of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards. This role is situated in a laboratory that operates 24 hours a day, with occasional visits to various testing locations. The incumbent will primarily work day shifts, with the possibility of weekends, on-call duties, or overtime as necessary.

Qualifications:

Education:
Associate degree in laboratory science, chemical, physical, biological science, or health-related fields.

License/Certification:
A current, unexpired Medical Laboratory Technician certification from a recognized certification agency, which must remain valid throughout employment.

Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years of documented experience in a clinical laboratory setting, performing at least moderate complexity testing.

Skills and Abilities:
A proven record of satisfactory performance in previous roles, as evidenced by positive references. Candidates must demonstrate success in the following areas:

Physical:
This role requires dexterity and skill in handling laboratory tools and instruments. The employee must possess the stamina to stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 30 pounds. Exposure to physical risks, including chemicals and pathogens, is inherent to the position.

Mental:
Constant mental focus and assertiveness are essential. The ability to prioritize tasks and exercise sound judgment is required. Effective communication and coping strategies for high-stress situations are necessary.

Environmental:
Employees may face prolonged exposure to infectious agents, chemical substances, and hazardous equipment. Frequent exposure to loud noises and occasional exposure to environmental extremes may occur.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to established laboratory policies for specimen management and reporting.
  2. Document corrective actions for performance deviations in testing systems.
  3. Maintain quality assurance by performing and documenting quality control activities.
  4. Conduct proficiency testing and ensure compliance with testing protocols.
  5. Manage inventory to ensure adequate supplies for laboratory operations.
  6. Participate in maintaining laboratory accreditation through adherence to safety and performance standards.
  7. Engage in continuing education through departmental meetings and training sessions.
  8. Develop collaborative relationships with medical and nursing staff regarding specimen processing and result interpretation.
  9. Provide training and competency evaluations for providers performing PPMP testing.
  10. Oversee daily assignments of Point of Care Assistants to ensure program efficiency.
  11. Develop and review laboratory processes for specimen handling and result documentation.
  12. Research and recommend new Point of Care instrumentation based on clinical needs.
  13. Implement educational resources to enhance understanding of point-of-care testing.
  14. Conduct audits of testing sites and report findings for corrective action.
  15. Collaborate on budget development and compliance for assigned sections.
  16. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  17. Complete other job-related duties as assigned.
