JOB SUMMARY
This position serves as a foundational role aimed at acquiring the necessary qualifications as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and Maintenance Training Program guidelines, preparing the individual for advancement to the Instrument Technician (IT) role.

Under general oversight, the incumbent engages in skilled tasks related to the upkeep and repair of equipment, machinery, facilities, and grounds associated with the Sewer District.

The role involves collaboration with team members in the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of various electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and other instrumentation devices and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in instrumentation tasks such as installation, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and calibration of plant instrumentation, which encompasses electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, and microprocessor-based equipment.

Additional duties involve:

  • Calculating output values from operational variables, installing conduits, pulling wiring, and performing minor fabrication tasks.
  • Operating Sewer District vehicles and equipment for transporting materials and tools.
  • Participating in the Preventive and Predictive Maintenance Program, including the inspection of instrumentation equipment.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting and analyzing malfunctioning equipment.
  • Utilizing the computerized maintenance management system for data entry and retrieval.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION
Candidates must possess a high school diploma, GED, or an equivalent state-recognized certification.

EXPERIENCE
Entry into the Maintenance Training Program (MTP) at the first milestone requires no prior experience; however, two (2) years of industrial maintenance experience is preferred.

Alternatively, for entry into the MTP at the third milestone (M6000), candidates must have:

  • Five (5) years of industrial instrumentation experience or related military training.

Completion of an accredited trade school program in electrical or instrumentation disciplines may substitute for work experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS
Candidates must hold a valid driver's license with a driving record that meets the Sewer District's standards. A certificate from an Industrial Machinery Instrument Technician or Millwright (Instrumentation) registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Labor is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Candidates should possess:

  • Basic knowledge and skills in mechanical and/or instrumentation trades, including inspection and record-keeping.
  • A working understanding of safety precautions related to instrumentation work.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • The capability to complete assessments demonstrating aptitude in instrumentation, electrical, mechanical, or other job-related subjects.
  • The ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Reliability and punctuality in reporting to work as scheduled.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees must be able to perform essential functions that include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, and negotiating.

Strong interpersonal communication skills are essential. Physical tasks may involve standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, and hearing.

Ability to lift up to 70 lbs. occasionally is required. Employees may encounter varying noise levels and must possess visual acuity for near and far distances, depth perception, and color vision.

Exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazards, vibrations, and confined spaces is part of the role. Employees must be able to wear required respiratory protection devices.
