Overview of the United Soccer League (USL)

The United Soccer League (USL) serves as a pivotal organization in American soccer, impacting numerous communities nationwide. It is the first and only soccer entity in the U.S. to create a comprehensive pathway for both male and female athletes, encompassing three professional leagues: USL Super League (women), USL Championship (men), and USL League One (men); along with two pre-professional leagues: USL League Two (men) and the USL W League (women); and two youth platforms: USL Academy and USL Youth.

With a commitment to authenticity and excitement, the USL aims to deliver an inclusive and memorable soccer experience for players, fans, and communities across the expanding soccer landscape.

Program Purpose

Under the mentorship of USL Executives and Leaders, the USL Work Experience Program (UWEP) offers students a unique chance to acquire practical sport management experience within a professional sports league. Participants will engage in various strategic projects and initiatives, gaining hands-on experience with league staff and member teams.

Interns will collaborate within a specialized department while interacting with all league divisions, including business development, digital, club services, analytics, and more, with the ultimate aim of providing a comprehensive practical work experience in sports.

Position Purpose

This role involves gaining experience across diverse projects, including content ideation, creation, caption writing, publishing, data collection, and community management across all properties. Under the guidance of the Social Media team, the intern will develop knowledge and experience with the league's social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. By participating in a collaborative team environment, the intern will contribute to the league's social media profiles while learning to build and execute campaigns across the entire digital landscape.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Support the social media department with various tasks during the season, including content creation and data collection for all leagues and properties.
  • Contribute innovative ideas to the USL content team.
  • Propose copy for social media posts.
  • Conduct competitor research and provide insights and best practices based on findings.
  • Assist the social team with graphic and video production.
  • Help create and distribute player content.
  • Manage content using tools such as Canto, WSC, Canva, and Photoshop.
  • Assist other departments and operational areas as needed to gain a comprehensive overview of working in sports.
Qualifications
  • Participants must be pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field and must confirm eligibility to receive college credit from an accredited institution for their participation.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, is essential.
  • Strong verbal communication skills are required.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic are essential, along with a team-oriented mindset and eagerness to learn.
  • Candidates should be highly organized and detail-oriented, focusing on quality and consistency.
  • Ability to work under flexible deadlines and complete tasks efficiently is necessary.
  • Knowledge of sports/soccer is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
  • While participating in the Work Experience Program remotely, candidates must have access to a computer or laptop with a reliable internet connection.
