Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated full-time Postdoctoral Associate to become part of an esteemed Boxwood Blight Insight Group. This collaborative team includes 14 Project Directors, a cohort of postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and an Advisory Panel comprised of industry experts, alongside numerous domestic and international partners. The focus of this initiative is to develop a comprehensive systems approach to enhance the health and productivity of boxwood crops, which are the leading evergreen shrub in the United States and a significant element in American horticulture.

The primary research objectives for this role may include: 1) expanding ongoing investigations into the microbiota associated with various boxwood species/cultivars, their plant parts, and age-related factors, along with their connections to agricultural practices; 2) exploring the metabolic capabilities and microbial functions of identified core taxa; 3) elucidating the interactions between these taxa, boxwood plants, and the blight pathogen; and/or 4) developing synthetic microbial community biosensors or innovating existing cultural practices to optimize benefits, including antagonistic effects against the blight pathogen and promoting boxwood growth.

Required Qualifications


• A PhD in plant science, microbiology, metagenomics, or a closely related field awarded within the last four years.

• Fundamental understanding of crop production and landscaping systems.

• Proven experience with Nanopore and other next-generation sequencing technologies, as well as metagenomics software/tools.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications


• Basic knowledge of plant pathology.

• Research experience involving boxwood crops or related plantings.

$53,350 - $65,029
