The Legal Aid Society seeks a skilled Paralegal to support the Civil Practice office citywide. This role provides client services, ensuring clients receive access to available resources and referrals when necessary. The Paralegal handles a range of tasks that support the office, including occasional duties at other Legal Aid Society offices or intake sites.
Key Responsibilities- Law Manager data entry and maintenance:
- Open and close cases
- Maintain and update case details
- Scan files
- Initiate conflict checks
- Generate routine reports
- Record and file management:
- Archive cases in Law Manager
- Manage off-site file storage
- Mail Services:
- Scan and distribute incoming mail
- Prepare and send outgoing mail
- Manage court-ordered service of documents via mail, email, and fax
- Messenger assignments:
- Field delivery/pickups
- Service of legal papers
- Client Support:
- Provide oral and written translation and interpretation support
- Support with client intake:
- Screening/referrals
- Assist with completing client intake forms and releases
- Register and schedule clients for appointments and interviews
- Intermediate conflict checks
- Unit Law Manager file maintenance and updates
- Refer clients to outside agencies and services when applicable
- Office Reception and Switchboard Coverage:
- General information and assistance to visitors, guests, clients, vendors, etc.
Requirements:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience is required
- One year of experience in a legal or other relevant work environment is highly preferred
- Some relevant college-level work and/or paralegal training preferred
- Strong writing, verbal, and organization skills
- Proficiency in word processing and strong computer skills
- Ability to learn and efficiently use new systems
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends
- Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired
- Fluency in Spanish or other languages is highly preferred
Salary Range: $53,295 - $81,795 per annum
