Under the supervision of the Department Administrator and direct clinical supervision by department physicians and advance practice providers, this role assists with routine and orthopedic surgical procedures. The Orthopedic Technician I provides written instructions for patients on the use of orthopedic devices and sets up and maintains supplies and equipment.
Key Responsibilities:- Assists physicians/providers with routine orthopedic devices and clinical surgical procedures.
- Applies casts, splints, traction, or other orthopedic devices as a technical function that does not involve choosing the appropriate treatment.
- Removes casts, splints, and orthopedic devices.
- Prepares patients for procedures and sets up instruments and equipment.
- Provides written instructions to patients on proper cast care and use of crutches and devices.
- Removes sutures or staples from superficial incisions after assessment by a provider.
- Assists patients with ambulation and transfers.
- Collects and records patient data, including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure.
- Records patient care services provided in the medical record.
- Graduate of an accredited Orthopedic Technician program or equivalent training in the military or 18 months of full-time Ortho Tech experience.
- High school diploma/GED required.
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Certified by the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT).
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to utilize principles, practices, and techniques of basic human anatomy, types of fractures, orthopedic equipment, and use of casts and splints.
- Ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge of cast application, traction, and orthopedic appliance application.
- Ability to demonstrate and utilize knowledge of surgical orthopedic and sterile techniques.
- Customer service skills.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) Level II required.
- Works alternating weekends.
- Will float to other Ortho locations.
- Must successfully pass or have passed the bilingual test within the last 12 months or be active in the QBS program.
