Role Objectives: This position involves responsibilities at various fixed aquatic structures where marine vessels and barges are secured, as well as aboard floating service boats. The operator will work within small teams to manage the mooring and unmooring of vessels and provide launch services.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing captain and boatman duties at various fixed aquatic structures.
  • Operating mooring boats for linemen.
  • Providing launch services as needed.
  • Maintaining navigational courses using aids and steering mechanisms.
  • Coordinating repairs, fueling, and supply logistics for vessels.
  • Ensuring equipment such as range markers, fire extinguishers, and fenders are maintained.
  • Utilizing hand signals and verbal commands to ensure crew safety at the dock.
  • Inspecting and reporting any signs of line wear or failure.
  • Adhering to safety protocols around mooring lines.
  • Working in various weather conditions.
  • Climbing ladders and navigating different water edge inclines.
  • Manually handling mooring lines between vessels and docking points.
  • Identifying training needs for best practices.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent in a related field.
  • Certification as a boat operator is mandatory.
  • Experience operating Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) in near coastal waters.
  • Current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Completion of Hazard Awareness Training.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps, and perform physical tasks such as lifting and dragging.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force and handle heavier loads as necessary.
  • Close visual acuity is essential for tasks involving analysis and inspection.
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions, including noise and physical hazards.

Working Conditions:

  • Work will be conducted both outdoors and indoors, during day and night shifts, often near water.
  • Frequent exposure to moving and vibrating equipment.
  • Conditions may include high humidity, elevated noise levels, and intense lighting.
  • Potential exposure to fire hazards and airborne particles.
  • Work surfaces may be elevated and require navigating various environmental conditions.
