Role Objectives: This position involves performing duties at various fixed water and waterfront structures where maritime vessels and barges are secured, as well as operating floating service boats. The role requires working in teams of 2-6 to execute mooring and unmooring tasks, along with providing launch services.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing captain and boatman duties at diverse water and waterfront locations.
  • Operating mooring boats for linemen.
  • Providing launch services as needed.
  • Maintaining designated courses using navigational tools and steering systems.
  • Coordinating repairs, fueling, and provisioning for vessels.
  • Ensuring the upkeep of equipment such as range markers, fire extinguishers, boat fenders, lines, pumps, and fittings.
  • Utilizing hand signals and verbal instructions to ensure crew safety at the dock.
  • Inspecting and reporting any signs of line wear, separation, or failure.
  • Adhering to safety protocols regarding mooring lines.
  • Working in various weather conditions.
  • Climbing vertical ladders to access boats, docks, piers, and walkways.
  • Navigating steep water edge inclines of different materials.
  • Manually handling vessel mooring lines.
  • Identifying training needs for best practices.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Boat operator certification is mandatory.
  • Certification as an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) for Near Coastal Waters.
  • Current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Completion of Hazard Awareness Training.
  • Valid Driver's License is necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and ramps, as well as lift, pull, drag, and reach.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force regularly and up to 150 pounds occasionally.
  • Close visual acuity is required for tasks such as analyzing figures and using measurement devices.
  • Worker may be exposed to various environmental conditions, including noise and physical hazards.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed both outdoors and indoors, during day and night shifts, often near water.
  • Involves working with moving and vibrating equipment.
  • Conditions may include high humidity, elevated noise levels, and intense light.
  • Potential exposure to airborne dust, fumes, and gases.
  • Work surfaces may be elevated and stable.
