Position Overview

The Forensic Nurse Examiner is a highly skilled professional, certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing, responsible for delivering specialized care to individuals affected by various forms of trauma, including sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking. This role operates autonomously under the guidance of the Senior System Director of Emergency Services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts forensic examinations on victims and suspects involved in physical, sexual, or domestic violence incidents.
  • Provides compassionate and timely care to patients reporting sexual assault, employing a clinical approach.
  • Secures consent for photography and evidence collection from the appropriate parties prior to examinations.
  • Utilizes advanced life support techniques to identify signs of strangulation during physical assessments.
  • Completes the necessary Physical Evidence Kit as mandated by law enforcement.
  • Ensures adherence to Chain of Custody protocols.
  • Collaborates with law enforcement, crime laboratories, and legal representatives regarding forensic findings and may provide expert testimony in court.
  • Administers testing and prophylactic treatments for patients at risk of HIV and offers educational resources.
  • Engages in peer review processes, departmental meetings, and Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) discussions.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Credentials:


Licensure/Certification: Must possess a current, valid Maryland Registered Nurse license in good standing. Forensic Nurse Examiner certification (FNE-A, FNE-P) is required.

Life Support Certification: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP).

Education: Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Nursing; Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years in a clinical environment is required; 3-5 years preferred, including 2 years in Emergency Medicine.

Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiar with medical terminology and forensic examination equipment.

Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication abilities, with a preference for bilingual candidates.

Analytical Skills: Capable of applying detailed processes and factual interpretation in complex situations.
