Role Summary:

Under the general guidance of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Pediatric Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering essential life-support, resuscitation, monitoring, and various medical gas therapies to patients. This role involves assisting patients across all age groups with both acute and chronic conditions, facilitating their return to a fulfilling lifestyle through education and the application of diverse therapeutic modalities.

The therapist may conduct diagnostic evaluations and monitoring using spirometry, both at the bedside and in conjunction with physician directives for pulmonary function assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
  • Delegate appropriate patient care tasks to support staff, including Respiratory Therapists, interns, and students, ensuring effective communication and guidance.
  • Engage with colleagues and other professionals, including physicians and nursing staff, to guarantee optimal patient care. Actively participate in daily bedside rounds.
  • Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrate expertise in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, life support systems, and diagnostic equipment as assigned. Exhibit competency in specialized procedures and protocols, working across multiple inpatient locations as required.
  • Administer prescribed therapeutic modalities and determine the most effective therapy methods to ensure maximum patient benefit and safety. Deliver medications via aerosol and endotracheal instillation using appropriate equipment.
  • Administer and monitor medical gases as per physician orders and established protocols, utilizing suitable delivery devices.
  • Evaluate the pulmonary status of patients, communicate clinical findings to physicians, and recommend appropriate therapies. Clearly explain procedures and equipment to patients, participating in comprehensive patient reporting processes to identify care needs.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, providing basic life support and assessing patient responses to clinical interventions.
  • Perform arterial and capillary blood sample collection and analysis, verifying and interpreting results while documenting and communicating findings to physicians as necessary.
  • Execute specific duties based on site assignments, which may include equipment cleaning, maintenance, repair, and testing.
