Position Summary
The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-centered nursing care and daily living support to assigned residents under the guidance of a licensed nurse. The MA is knowledgeable in providing age-appropriate care tailored to the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans. Responsibilities include assisting with essential health care tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and recording vital signs, while also offering psycho-social support and personal care.
The MA may assist residents with mobility, utilizing proper transfer techniques and equipment, and providing range of motion exercises. Responsibilities also encompass food preparation and ensuring a positive dining experience for residents, including assistance with meals and hydration.
Medications are administered as directed by a licensed nurse, in compliance with state regulations. The MA documents care outcomes, medication administration, and any changes in resident conditions, communicating effectively with the charge nurse regarding care-related concerns. Additional duties include collecting non-invasive specimens, taking vital signs, and maintaining cleanliness in living areas.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, but not mandatory. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, with prior experience in clinical or nursing assistant roles in long-term care being advantageous. Annual competency testing and continuing education credits are required, with a minimum of 12 hours of education annually based on state regulations. Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is necessary in some states, along with successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course.
