Job Summary

The City of Saratoga Springs is seeking a highly skilled Urban Planning Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Planning Department, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our city through effective planning and development strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and prepare comprehensive planning reports and presentations for the Planning Commission and City Council.
  • Analyze and make recommendations on revisions and updates to the General Plan, City ordinances, and development proposals.
  • Prepare written and oral reports, as well as presentations, on planning programs, long-range plans, and studies.
  • Assist the public with various land use applications and permits.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and files.
  • Conduct studies and analyses on population, transportation, housing, and economics.
  • Coordinate planning projects, studies, and research.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding development, planning projects, codes, and policies.
  • Provide professional advice to staff, property owners, developers, residents, and public officials.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and prepare project progress reports.
  • Create and update General Plan elements and Code language.
  • Coordinate activities with other public agencies and departments.
  • Collaborate with external organizations, such as the Jordan River Commission and Mountainland Association of Governments.
  • Effectively work with City staff, citizens, and neighborhood groups to achieve planning and development goals.
  • Participate in Development Review Committee meetings.
  • Review and make recommendations on development proposals, including subdivisions, condominiums, site plans, conditional uses, and General Plan amendments.
  • Provide reviews and redlines to developers on land use proposals.
  • Review plans for landscaping, architecture, fencing, signs, parking, streets, and other site plan and subdivision components.
  • Utilize computer software, including GIS programs.
  • Attend evening meetings to present planning and development projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning, geography, public administration, civil engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience in planning, code enforcement, zoning, civil engineering, or a closely related field.
  • A valid Utah driver's license.
  • AICP certification expected when minimum education/work experience is achieved.

  • Work for sustained periods of time maintaining attention to detail.
  • Must be able to follow directions and maintain a safe working environment while in the field.
