The Assistant Professor of Medical Sciences will be integral in the design, execution, and delivery of the Phase 1 curriculum at the School of Medicine. This role involves mentoring students, participating in various committees, and pursuing independent research and scholarship as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
A typical day for an Assistant Professor of Medical Sciences at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Engaging in the School of Medicine's medical education program, which features a comprehensive 3+1 curriculum that allows students to tailor their 4th year following a 3-year core curriculum. This curriculum promotes lifelong learning and encourages active learning methodologies among faculty.
- Contributing to the School of Medicine and participating in professional committees and communities.
- Actively involved in enhancing the curriculum.
- Providing academic guidance to students.
- Assisting with accreditation processes including LCME, MSCHE, OSHE, NJ-BME, and DOE.
- Engaging in research and scholarship to further medical education and scientific understanding.
- Performing additional faculty responsibilities and taking on academic roles appropriate to rank and experience.
- Completing other assigned duties and projects.
- Upholding HMH Organizational competencies and standards of conduct.
Qualifications
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Possession of a terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., D.O.) with a focus in a basic science discipline.
- Proficiency in one of the following areas: Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Immunology/Microbiology, Anatomy/Neuroanatomy.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching within undergraduate medical education or other health science environments.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with team-based, problem-based, and case-based learning in both large and small classroom settings.
- Evidence of scholarly work (e.g., publications, patents, external grant funding, research) in a relevant field.
- Proven ability to effectively implement active learning strategies.
- Experience in developing integrated medical science course materials for undergraduate medical students in both preclinical and clinical phases.
- Skills necessary to contribute to the ongoing development of a medical sciences department at a new allopathic medical school.
- Experience with LCME accreditation processes and the establishment of new medical schools.
