Position Summary:
The Railcar Inspector is responsible for conducting thorough inspections of incoming railcars and preparing detailed work orders and customer estimates that outline necessary repairs and modifications in compliance with customer specifications, AAR/FRA standards, and VLS protocols. This role includes random inspections of in-process railcars to ensure adherence to high-quality standards and performing outbound audits to verify that completed work meets all required specifications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure personal and team safety within the shop environment.
  • Understand and apply AAR/FRA regulations.
  • Interpret and reference customer specifications accurately.
  • Utilize the VLS estimating system proficiently.
  • Estimate repairs and modifications for railcars competently.
  • Communicate effectively with customers regarding specific car needs and estimated timelines.
  • Read and comprehend Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Interpret VLS guidelines, customer requirements, and AAR/FRA Field Manual protocols.
  • Execute all tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Continuously seek and propose improvements to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Assist in training new employees in inspection and repair processes.
  • Keep supervisors informed of any issues related to estimates or potential delays.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of inspection tools and equipment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Basic skills in mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Prior experience in manufacturing, industrial, environmental, waste management, or railroad sectors.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Availability to work Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, with mandatory overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to work weekends when necessary.
  • Dependable and effective time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One to two years of relevant experience or training in a railcar shop or welding repair.
  • Experience in Welding and Non-Destructive Testing is advantageous.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
  • Able to stand for extended periods with limited breaks.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in extreme temperatures and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and moving mechanical parts.
  • Specific vision capabilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
