Position Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF ROLE:

Under the supervision of the Facility Medical Director, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) delivers extensive behavioral health services to adult patients in both inpatient and outpatient environments. The clientele includes adults facing chronic and persistent mental health challenges, often with intricate bio-psycho-social requirements.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Deliver comprehensive behavioral health services, including psychiatric evaluations, diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up care for adult patients, adhering to established standards of psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nursing and within the bounds of licensure.
  • Prescribe psychiatric and medical medications as needed.
  • Conduct ongoing medication assessments to monitor effectiveness and side effects, including AIMS testing as per facility protocols.
  • Evaluate patients' ability to make informed decisions regarding their treatment.
  • Collaborate with community care providers to assess patient needs, ensuring continuity of care during transitions and developing suitable discharge and aftercare plans.
  • Engage in site-based performance enhancement and compliance activities in line with job responsibilities.
  • Order necessary laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures based on clinical indications.
  • Gather patient histories and perform physical assessments.
  • Communicate findings clearly and systematically, both verbally and in writing.
  • Make timely referrals and initiate treatments according to established policies and procedures.
  • Document health issues and care plans in accordance with electronic medical records standards.
  • Implement care safely and effectively, utilizing approved therapeutic regimens in compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Assess and document patient progress and responses to interventions.
  • Refer patients to physicians or other healthcare team members as necessary.
  • Act as a resource for other professionals and non-professional staff, providing guidance as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a focus on psychiatric mental health nursing. Board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
  • Current, unrestricted licensure as a psychiatric-mental health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Possession or ability to obtain Federal DEA Registration and eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid participation.
  • Possession or ability to acquire a Controlled Substance Certificate.
Additional Information

This role is primarily hospital-based.

The PMHNP will provide comprehensive psychiatric care to adolescents in need of specialized mental health services. This includes:

  • Developing treatment plans for adolescents with complex mental health issues, particularly those at risk of self-harm or harm to others.
  • Delivering individualized, strength-based, trauma-informed psychiatric care.
  • Facilitating recovery-oriented care that involves collaboration with the youth and their families, as well as relevant care team members, to ensure active treatment and timely transitions to less restrictive environments.
  • Providing psychopharmacological services that align with best practices for adolescents, informed by evidence-based methodologies.
