Job Title: Permit Technician

Department: Building Department

Reports to: Chief Building Official

Job Summary:

The Permit Technician is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to the public, contractors, and other stakeholders by facilitating permit applications, plan reviews, inspections, and permit closures. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills to ensure that all records and documents are maintained in an organized manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service: Interact professionally with customers, contractors, and other stakeholders to facilitate permit applications, plan reviews, inspections, and permit closures.
  • Permit Processing: Accept, review, and process permit applications, ensuring that all required documentation is complete.
  • Records Management: Establish and maintain organized systems for managing permit files, blueprints, inspection reports, reference manuals, and other related documents.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with plans examiners, building inspectors, and other municipal staff to develop and maintain consistent processes.
  • Compliance: Ensure that all permit applications comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Public Records: Assist with public record requests and facilitate the conversion of records to digital formats when necessary.
  • Billing Support: Manage the billing process related to permit issuance, including fee collection, invoicing, and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Meeting Clerk Duties: Serve as the clerk for the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBOA) and/or Planning Commission meetings.
  • Reporting: Prepare regular reports on permit activity, including the number of permits issued, revenue generated, and any compliance issues encountered.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of administrative and customer service experience required.
  • Prior experience as a Permit Technician or in municipal administration preferred.
  • ICC Permit Technician Certification is a plus.
  • Experience in clerking for municipal boards or commissions is preferred.

Work Environment:

The Permit Technician will work in a fast-paced office environment with frequent customer interactions. Occasional fieldwork may be required for inspections or customer service needs. The ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods is required. Must be able to lift and carry files and documents weighing up to 25 pounds. Occasional evening or weekend work required to attend ZBOA and/or Planning Commission meetings.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
