Position Overview:

The Chair of Pediatric Surgery at Akron Children's Hospital is the foremost advocate for patients and families within the Surgery Department. This role includes both clinical and administrative leadership, emphasizing excellence in patient care, research, and education. The Chair is responsible for ensuring high-quality care and supporting the professional growth of clinical staff. Collaboration with institutional and departmental administrative teams is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, ensuring patient access, and fostering a diverse and satisfying workplace culture. Furthermore, the Chair is expected to propose and lead clinical initiatives and promote interdepartmental cooperation to achieve clinical excellence and continuous improvement in academic and educational programs.

Qualifications:

  • Board Certification in Pediatric General Surgery, with fellowship training and pediatric sub-boards preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience in pediatric surgery.
  • Strong dedication to excellence in patient care, research, and education.
Key Responsibilities:

Vision and Leadership:
    • Articulate a clear vision for the Surgery Department that aligns with the hospital's mission.
    • Contribute to the growth and maintenance of clinical, research, quality, and academic programs.
    • Serve as a senior advisor to clinical division leaders and facilitate leadership development within the department.
Administrative Management:
    • Work with hospital and external services to create strategic plans for surgical growth.
    • Partner with hospital and departmental administrative teams to oversee departmental operations, finances, and budgeting.
    • Ensure compliance with regulations and maintain Trauma and CSV verification.
    • Engage with the Perioperative Leadership Team in managing surgical operations and block time allocation, with the potential to take on the role of surgical operations director if qualified.
    • Provide mentorship and career development for departmental clinical leaders and advanced practice providers.
    • Maintain regular departmental meetings to communicate policies, manage operations, and inspire performance and quality.
    • Lead recruitment efforts to ensure adequate staffing for departmental functions.
Community Involvement:
    • Act as a liaison between hospital administration and surgical department providers.
    • Participate actively in monthly Executive Leadership Team and Senior Physician Leadership Forum meetings.
    • Engage in relevant medical staff and leadership committees.
    • Build collaborative relationships with regional universities and health systems.
    • Support hospital fundraising initiatives.
Research Leadership:
    • Encourage research initiatives within the department, collaborating with the Chief Research Officer and Research Institute.
    • Mentor and support departmental physicians and researchers.
Educational Commitment:
    • Promote the educational mission of the department and maintain an academic appointment at a partnering medical university.
    • Collaborate with the Department of Medical Education to enhance surgical training programs.
    • Lead the establishment and implementation of an ACGME Pediatric Surgery Fellowship.
Key Relationships:
  • Reports to: Surgeon in Chief
  • Direct Reports: Department Surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers, Division Directors, Trauma Medical Director, Departmental Lead APP
  • Other Key Relationships: Department Chairs, Service Line Chiefs, Chair of Anesthesia, Senior Hospital Leadership, Chiefs of Non-Hospital Based and Hospital-Based Services, Vice Presidents of Hospital Operations, Nursing Administration, Perioperative and operating room staff.
Employment Details:
  • Full-time, employed position with an administrative component requiring FTE.
  • Clinical responsibilities are expected to be maintained at FTE.
Quality Improvement:
  • Support hospital quality and operational performance enhancement.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance with the hospital's quality management programs; participate in relevant committees and meetings as required.
Other Duties:
  • Additional responsibilities may be outlined in the Medical Director job description as per hospital policies.
  • Other duties may be specified in the Medical Staff Bylaws.
This position qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through the Federal government.
