Under the guidance of the Executive Director, a Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for delivering engaging and effective classes that foster comprehensive fitness growth for participants.

It is essential to create a welcoming environment by using participants' names whenever possible, expressing gratitude, and prioritizing relationship building consistently. This role is pivotal in embodying the mission, vision, and core values of the YMCA of Greater Hartford.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate group fitness sessions in accordance with the YMCA of Greater Hartford Program Quality Standards and the designated class format.
  • Enhance personal expertise by pursuing and attending at least one YMCA training or other recognized professional development in the health and fitness sector.
  • Oversee class participants and activities to ensure safety and promptly report any irregularities to the supervisor.
  • Provide handouts, announcements, and evaluations to participants as directed by the supervisor.
  • Welcome new members by addressing their inquiries and educating them about YMCA's offerings.
  • Maintain an active interest in and knowledge of current branch programs, sharing insights with members and the community.
  • Act as a professional ambassador for the YMCA.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow staff members, offering assistance when needed.
  • Be accessible to all members, regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level. Share your expertise and serve as a reliable source for health and fitness information.
  • Take responsibility for keeping the studio/exercise area and equipment tidy and report any equipment issues to the Wellness staff or coordinator.
  • Be knowledgeable about emergency protocols and respond promptly and appropriately.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and provide the supervisor with at least two weeks' notice for any schedule changes.
  • Ensure to arrange for qualified substitutes when necessary and inform the supervisor accordingly.
  • Allocate at least ten minutes for class preparation and allow for a minimum of five minutes post-class to be available for members.
  • Arrive for assigned classes well-groomed and in appropriate attire.
  • Attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.
  • Promote only YMCA programs and services, refraining from endorsing external products or services to members or guests.
  • Maintain current CPR certifications and meet Association Pre-Practicum requirements.
  • Possess national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
  • Hold certifications in areas of specialization.
  • Preferred: At least one year of experience in teaching group wellness classes.
  • Complete Group Exercise Pre-Hire Practicum.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for the duration of the shift.
  • Occasional bending and stooping required.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds.
