Our mission involves developing leaders and fostering alliances to create a grassroots movement aimed at advancing economic, racial, and environmental equity. We represent over 125,000 individual members and numerous affiliated organizations across the state.

Role Overview: The Chief Organizer for Housing Equity will work under the guidance of our Campaigns Director to enhance and broaden our housing justice initiatives. This role involves collaborating with a team of regional organizers to establish a statewide network of tenant organizations and forging partnerships with potential ally organizations. Additionally, the Chief Organizer may oversee new tenant organizers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strong base of tenant leaders through the establishment of tenant organizations statewide.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor Progressive Maryland members to assume leadership roles within their campaigns.
  • Hire and oversee additional tenant organizers as needed.
  • Manage and train members to engage in canvassing and phone banking efforts throughout the election cycle.
  • Mobilize community members to participate in various actions, including attending events, providing legislative testimony, and signing petitions.
  • Utilize phone outreach, social media, and community engagement strategies to recruit and identify potential members.
  • Encourage individuals to become dues-paying members of Progressive Maryland.
  • Achieve outreach and base-building objectives, ensuring accurate and timely reporting each week.
  • Collaborate with the Campaigns Director to create and execute campaign strategies.
  • Represent Progressive Maryland in coalition spaces related to housing justice initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in organizing tenants within the framework of tenant union drives or issue campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage direct reports effectively.
  • Basic computer skills and a willingness to learn new digital tools.
  • Capacity to meet deadlines under pressure while managing multiple projects.
  • Ability to work autonomously, as part of a team, and in a leadership capacity.
  • Experience in training and managing volunteer members.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to navigate complex situations and adapt as necessary.
  • A deep understanding of the challenges faced by our communities and a commitment to addressing these issues.
  • Willingness to reside in or relocate to Maryland or DC.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Maryland's political landscape at various levels.
  • Experience with campaign platforms such as Votebuilder/VAN.
  • Understanding of criminal justice reform and progressive drug policy approaches.

Travel Requirements: Reliable access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license is essential, along with a laptop and phone for regular travel throughout the region and across Maryland as needed.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, ranging from $60,000 to $70,000. Benefits include comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan with a generous employer match, paid vacation, personal days, sick leave, and holidays. Progressive Maryland is a unionized workplace, and this position is at-will.
