Position Overview: The Registered Nurse (RN) PRN role at Houston Methodist is designed for a licensed nursing professional who demonstrates a solid understanding of clinical practices, functioning at the Competent to Proficient level as per Benner's model.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver professional nursing care to a diverse array of patients, performing comprehensive nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, and ensuring meticulous maintenance of medical records.
  • Provide direct patient care with efficiency and effectiveness, addressing the varied and complex needs of patients.
  • Engage in effective communication and collaboration with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate and maintain high-quality, compassionate care aimed at achieving desired treatment outcomes.
  • Exhibit clinical competence in administering medications, utilizing technology, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, while advocating for patient and family rights.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities, which may include participating in or leading unit governance initiatives, serving as a charge nurse, or mentoring new staff and students.

Essential Functions:

  • Utilize therapeutic communication techniques to build relationships with patients, families, and the healthcare team, collaborating on care plans.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by being aware of unit acuity and offering assistance as needed.
  • Seek and provide guidance within the interprofessional team to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Implement educational initiatives tailored to patient populations and unit processes, while mentoring staff and students.
  • Follow patient and family-centered care standards, conducting assessments and maintaining accurate medical records.
  • Develop and communicate comprehensive care plans in partnership with patients and families, prioritizing care based on individual needs and preferences.
  • Advocate for patients and families to address clinical and ethical concerns, ensuring appropriate resources are utilized.
  • Evaluate patient understanding and adapt teaching methods accordingly to enhance comprehension.

Quality and Safety:

  • Adhere to established standards of care and regulatory requirements, identifying areas for improvement based on evidence-based practices.
  • Utilize clinical judgment to modify care for complex patients, ensuring accurate documentation and coordination with the healthcare team.
  • Enhance quality and safety metrics through accountability and collaboration with the interprofessional team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Current RN licensure in Texas or Compact State, along with BLS certification.
  • Preferred: ANCC Recognized Certification in relevant specialty area.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in English communication, both written and verbal, to ensure effective interaction with patients and team members.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in clinical situations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time management and the use of Microsoft Office applications.
