Overview
The role of a Respiratory Therapist at One Brooklyn Health is multifaceted, involving the monitoring of patients' progress and educating patients and their family members on prescribed respiratory treatment methods and equipment. Emergency respiratory care services are provided as needed. The therapist treats pediatric patients who experience difficulty breathing due to congenital abnormalities, heart issues, or lung problems. Specialized apparatus and therapies are utilized to aid in the diagnosis and evaluation of respiratory issues.
- The Respiratory Therapist administers nebulized treatments, chest physiotherapy, and oxygen therapy delivery in various modalities, including bag/mask ventilation and other accepted treatments, to maintain a patent airway.
- Responsibilities include monitoring residents on various oxygen support systems, maintaining a secure and patent resident airway, and performing nasal, nasotracheal, Endotracheal, and oral suctioning.
- The selection, assembly, and checking of equipment used in respiratory treatment are critical duties.
- Collecting, reviewing, and maintaining a resident's medical history and records are essential tasks.
- Pulmonary function tests are performed, and treatments are monitored for residents.
- Providing resident and family instruction and education in respiratory-related disease processes and therapeutic procedures is crucial for continued home care.
- Collaboration with physicians/nurse practitioners to perform special procedures is an integral part of this role.
- Pulmonary function tests are conducted to assess lung function, and blood samples are drawn to analyze oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels.
Qualifications
- An Associates Degree from an AMA-accredited Respiratory Therapy Program is required.
- A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
Experience
- No prior experience is necessary.
Knowledge and Skills
- The ability to work in environments with varying degrees of dust and noise without undue discomfort.
- The capacity to hear, speak, walk, stand, bend, and stretch.
- Reading, writing, and interpreting documents are essential skills.
- Effective communication with patients and coworkers is vital.
- Familiarity with Kingsbrook/Rutland policies and procedures regarding hazardous waste and materials is mandatory.
Salary and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range of $ 65,000 to 80,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package includes health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
Licenses and Certifications
- NYS Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist is a requirement.
- BCLS Certification is required.
- ACLS Certification is required.
- PALS Certification is required.
Physical Requirements
- The position involves prolonged standing, reaching, and walking throughout the working day.
- Position requires stooping, bending, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
- Moderate physical exertion may be required to handle reasonably heavy weights across distances.
- Occasionally, assistance with patient transfers onto/out of exam beds/procedure stations may be necessary.
