POSITION OVERVIEW
This recruitment is ongoing and will close once a suitable candidate pool is established.
The Law Enforcement Officer (Lateral) operates under general supervision in various conditions, executing a range of law enforcement responsibilities that include safeguarding life and property; enforcing laws and regulations; conducting criminal investigations; preventing and addressing crime; maintaining public order; performing specialized tasks in the protection of life and property; and related duties as necessary.
Ideal candidates should possess a solid understanding of contemporary policing challenges, philosophies, practices, and trends, including the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Candidates must also demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse community. Graduation from a POST certified academy within the last year is highly desirable.

ABOUT VALLEJO
The City of Vallejo is situated in Solano County and has a population of approximately 121,000 residents. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are essential to the Law Enforcement Officer (Lateral) role:
- Enforce local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Patrol assigned areas of the city by vehicle, motorcycle, or on foot.
- Protect individuals and property during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other emergencies.
- Pursue, subdue, apprehend, and control uncooperative or combative individuals.
- Prepare reports of arrests, activities, and unusual incidents.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, criminal incidents, and accidents.
- Prepare and execute search and arrest warrants; make arrests; serve warrants and subpoenas.
- Interview suspects, victims, complainants, and witnesses.
- Coordinate investigations of violent crimes, child abuse, property crimes, and narcotics violations.
- Testify and present evidence in court; provide backup support for other officers.
- Collect, preserve, and maintain evidence and property.
- Assist motorists and enforce traffic safety laws.
- Transport prisoners and perform searches.
- Respond to demonstrations, riots, and other hazardous situations.
- Maintain public relations and address potential law enforcement issues.
- Monitor and direct traffic conditions.
- Check buildings for security.
- Administer first aid as necessary.
Knowledge:
- Law enforcement terminology, methods, and concepts as taught in a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy.
- Techniques for managing individuals in hostile and emergency situations.
- Act with integrity and professionalism to maintain public trust.

- A High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
AND
a) Currently employed as a peace officer in a California law enforcement agency with one year of full-time experience, or having been so employed within the last two years;
Certification: Possession of a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
OR
b) Currently employed as a peace officer with a law enforcement agency in another state with one year of full-time experience, or having been so employed within the last two years;
Certification: Possession of a current California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate Waiver.
IN ACCORDANCE WITH P.O.S.T., ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
- Possess a valid California driver's license.
- Possess a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
- Be at least 20 years old by the date of the written examination and 21 years or older at the time of appointment.
- Meet vision requirements.
- Be eligible for U.S. citizenship at the time of appointment.
- No felony convictions.
- No misdemeanor convictions that prohibit weapon possession.
In accordance with California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) guidelines, incumbents must continuously demonstrate competence in established peace officer job dimensions, including integrity, communication skills, judgment under pressure, and interpersonal sensitivity.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions may involve physical activities such as running, jumping, and subduing individuals, as well as exposure to dangerous situations.
