Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our team at the Grand Island, Nebraska Veterans Medical Center. As an LPN, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program.

Job Summary:

The LPN will work under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) or provider and will be responsible for observing, recording, and reporting changes in the Veteran's condition. You will also assist in the development and revision of the Veteran's care plan, ensuring that each patient receives personalized and effective care.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.
  • Completes patient-focused assessments, recognizing risk factors and/or signs and symptoms of withdrawal.
  • Administers medications and injections, observing and documenting patient response and reporting change in the patient's condition.
  • Performs urine specimen collections, breathalyzer, and other point-of-care specimen collection as ordered.
  • Lables and stores lab specimens appropriately.
  • Participates in nursing reports and other care team meetings to ensure continuity in Veterans care.
  • Participates in patient/family teaching programs related to health promotion and reinforces instructions provided by the registered nurse and physician.
  • Initiates therapeutic communications with Veterans and families utilizing formal and informal communication processes.
  • Initiates and evaluates Veterans participation in the mental health setting such as nursing-led groups and community meetings.
  • Participates in unit committees as directed.
  • Provides input and reporting outcomes to the Nurse Manager.
Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be able to pass a background/security investigation.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination or evaluation.
  • Must be able to participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
  • Must be able to participate in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Preferred Experience:

Knowledge of pharmacology, particularly psychotropic medications, is preferred but not required.

Education:

Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (Formerly: National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission).

Work Schedule:

Intermittent employment is defined as non-full-time employment in which employees serve under an appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty.
