About This Role:
The Farm Manager is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the crop and livestock systems at Kansas State University. The Farm Manager receives input/requests for work from various faculty conducting research at the university. The Farm Manager, in conjunction with the department head, prioritizes research requests and ongoing operations. The Farm Manager has latitude to schedule labor and inputs to meet objectives of research/production and provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what must be done, limitations, quality and quantity expectations, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervising faculty provide additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments including suggested work methods. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction or close supervision, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions or experience to the supervising faculty for decision or help. The supervisor assures that finished work and methods used are those desired. Review of work depends on complexity of the task and incumbent's familiarity with the task.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise staff to ensure effective crop and livestock systems
- Prioritize research requests and ongoing operations in conjunction with department head
- Schedule labor and inputs to meet research/production objectives
- Provide continuing or individual assignments to staff
- Refer deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to supervising faculty for decision or help
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Agronomy, Animal Science, or closely related field
- 3 or more years of experience in diversified ag production setting
- Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, to interpret precise instructions, procedures, technical plans and designs, and keep research and production records
- Ability to drive large and small farm equipment safely and skillfully
- Ability to recognize plant diseases, weeds and signs of insect infestation
- Knowledge of the hazards and effects of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.) and the ability to read and interpret label and MSDS instructions regarding safe and proper use of agricultural chemicals
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions pertaining repair, maintenance, and operation of agricultural equipment, vehicles, and power tools
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, and tools used in planting and the ability to read and follow plans and designs for planting trees, shrubs, grasses, and crop plants
- Ability to setup, calibrate, and operate precision agricultural equipment
- Knowledge of methods and principles of supervision and the ability to plan, assign, review and evaluate work of other employees
- Knowledge of geographic information systems for precision farm operations and spatial tools (e.g. SMS Advanced or similar)
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS degree in Agronomy or Animal Science or other relevant field
- Five years experience in large-scale farming operations
- Demonstrated skill in managing and supervising staff
- Vocational training in the safe and proper use of pesticides
