Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Bus Driver to join our team at Stony Brook University. As a Bus Driver, you will be responsible for safely transporting passengers and materials across campus and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property, ensuring the safety of passengers and adhering to all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of the vehicle, checking horn, directional lights, head, tail, parking, and emergency lights for proper operation, as well as the braking system and tires.
  • Monitor gauges and refuel the tank as necessary, ensuring the vehicle is always in good working condition.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers and personal property onto the bus, maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
  • Post manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and passengers transported, including compiling count sheets from all drivers when assigned.
  • Transport passengers with disabilities, providing a safe and comfortable experience.
  • Operate radio and/or cellular telephones as needed to communicate with dispatchers, ensuring timely and efficient communication.
  • Keep written records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel bridges, tolls, and records of passenger counts, reporting any malfunctions or needed repairs to supervisors or maintenance staff.
  • Drive campus routes and perform charters for departments and graduation work for Stony Brook University, adhering to all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Wash, sweep, clean, and fuel buses, as well as vans and other state vehicles, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • In emergency situations, perform minor repairs, such as replacing bulbs, adding air to tires, or replacing windshield wiper blades, as needed.
  • Map routes, itineraries, and points of call for other drivers, as well as yourself, ensuring efficient and safe transportation.
  • Transport vehicles to and from vendors for repairs, maintaining a safe and timely schedule.
Requirements
  • Valid CDL license Class B with Passenger and Air Brakes.
  • Ability to be 19A certified as required by New York State DMV.
  • Motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment testing for controlled substance use as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration Omnibus Transportation Act of 1991.
  • Compliance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing).
Working Conditions

This is a temporary full-time position, 40 hours per week, with shift and pass days varied. Night and weekend work may be required. FLSA Nonexempt positions, eligible for overtime provisions of the FLSA. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
