GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Team Leader, this role involves assisting in the collection, documentation, and analysis of biological data related to the state's freshwater fisheries. The position requires interaction with the public to gather fisheries-related information, provide assistance, and engage in outreach activities. Responsibilities also include the maintenance of equipment and facilities, operation of boats and motors, and utilization of various fisheries sampling tools. Additionally, the technician will fabricate specialized equipment for fisheries projects, complete routine administrative tasks, and perform other duties as assigned while adhering to all Agency, Division, and Branch regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from High School or possession of a GED.

Experience:

FWT I: No prior experience required.

FWT II: A minimum of four years of relevant experience.

Licensure:

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid class 'C' Texas driver's license within 30 days of employment. Retention in this position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining the required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Experience:

FWT II ONLY: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a relevant Bachelor's degree may substitute for two years of relevant experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries Science or a related biological science.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Fish and Wildlife Technician I:

Knowledge of basic mechanics, carpentry, and electrical wiring.

Fish and Wildlife Technician II:

Knowledge of FWT I duties, plus an understanding of fisheries management principles and familiarity with division and agency policies and procedures.

Fish and Wildlife Technician I:

Skills in effective verbal and written communication, establishing and maintaining productive work relationships, and proficiency in using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Fish and Wildlife Technician II:

Skills of a FWT I, plus the ability to identify freshwater fishes, plants, and organisms, operate boats and specialized equipment safely, and make independent, timely decisions.

Fish and Wildlife Technician I:

Ability to collect and document biological data accurately, follow instructions diligently, work collaboratively as part of a team, and perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. Must conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety protocols and work under moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

Fish and Wildlife Technician II:

Ability of a FWT I, plus the capacity to work independently with minimal supervision, maintain facilities and equipment, and operate under general supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, including flexible schedules that may involve hours outside of the standard 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. timeframe, as well as working on days other than weekends and holidays. Overtime may be necessary, and the role involves outdoor work, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, as well as water-based field activities, including work aboard boats. Manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs., is required. The technician will operate a State vehicle and may need to travel up to 40% of the time, which could include overnight stays. Compliance with TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures is mandatory. This is a non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
