Position Overview

The Director of Surgical Services is dedicated to exceeding customer expectations and creating an exceptional experience at Marion Health through warm, sincere, and empathetic interactions.

This role involves overseeing and coordinating the functions of the Operating Room, Endoscopy, Post Anesthetic Care Unit, Ambulatory Surgery Department, Peri-operative Clinic, Pre-Admission Testing Department, OR Supply Coordinators, Surgery Center, and the Operating Room Central Sterile department around the clock. The Director is responsible for the continuous development of departmental policies and procedures, engaging in the investigation and preparation of reports aimed at enhancing care and services, maintaining regulatory compliance, and managing inventory and safety training within the Operating Room/Surgery Center. The Director ensures adequate staffing levels to uphold quality patient care and addresses patient needs efficiently and cost-effectively. This position also requires adherence to policies and procedures while maintaining high-level communication with Administration, physicians, unit staff, and other personnel to ensure best practices for our customers. The Director's leadership aligns with the department's mission, vision, values, and strategic quality plans, reflecting the organization's current and future strategic priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, train, orient, coach, and mentor staff and management.
  • Establish and monitor quality standards and work expectations.

Essential Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a B.S.N. and a valid Indiana Registered Nurse License.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a hospital or related environment, including at least two years in a management role.
  • Experience in the Operating Room is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An M.S.N. degree is preferred; however, a BS or MS in Management or Administration will be considered.
  • Certification in a related field is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare policies, regulations, and reimbursement practices relevant to the department.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and administrative skills to manage multiple issues simultaneously while effectively prioritizing tasks.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to engage with employees at all levels, negotiate effective working relationships, and resolve conflicts positively.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to make quick, effective decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Demonstrated emotional resilience and a calm demeanor when interacting with individuals.
  • Experience handling confidential and protected health information.

Work Environment

  • This position entails regular exposure to occupational hazards associated with blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • This role requires a commitment to 24-hour accountability.
  • Utilization of computers and standard office equipment is necessary.
  • Operation of patient care equipment typically found in nursing units or specialized departments is required.
