Job Title: Clinical Veterinarian

Job Summary:

The McConnell Group, Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Veterinarian to join our team at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. As a Clinical Veterinarian, you will play a critical role in providing support to our research and development program by caring for large animals in accordance with established procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Animal Care and Treatment: Conduct clinical rounds, prescribe treatment plans, and provide medical care to injured or sick animals.
  2. Support to Deputy Attending Veterinarian: Provide assistance and guidance to the Deputy Attending Veterinarian in ensuring the health and well-being of animals.
  3. Animal Health Reporting: Generate and maintain animal health report data for in-house health cases.
  4. Animal Welfare Evaluation: Evaluate study animals to assess animal welfare and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  5. Euthanasia and Medication Administration: Perform euthanasia and administer medications as needed.
  6. Medication Distribution: Distribute medications and anesthetic agents to staff working with study animals.
  7. Animal Examination and Treatment: Examine incoming animals and treat them if necessary.
  8. Epidemiological Data Reporting: Report epidemiological data on in-house animal health data to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  9. Committee Participation: Attend and participate in IACUC meetings and vivarium-related committees.
  10. Incident Investigation and Reporting: Investigate and generate reports for incidents involving vendors, animal health, and animal welfare.
  11. Mentorship and Training: Mentor and provide technical training to animal care staff, animal health technicians, and research staff.
  12. Vivarium Inspections: Prepare and participate in PIADC vivarium inspections.
  13. Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM): Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Licensure: Be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in one state within the United States.
  3. Experience: Have a minimum of 1 year of clinical experience with large animals (swine and cattle).
  4. Working with Experimentally Infected Animals: Have experience working with experimentally infected animals.
  5. Communication Skills: Possess effective verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Security Clearance: Be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3 (PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety Programs.

Candidates must pass a government background investigation (NAC), employment physical, and drug/alcohol screening.
