Job Overview

At Synectics Inc, we are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Veterinarian to join our team at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. As a key member of our research team, you will play a critical role in supporting the Department of Homeland Security Research and Development Program vaccine studies by providing expert care for large animals in accordance with established procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough clinical rounds and develop effective treatment plans for injured or sick animals.
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Attending Veterinarian to generate and maintain accurate animal health report data for in-house health cases.
  • Evaluate study animals to assess their welfare and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Perform euthanasia procedures as necessary.
  • Administer and distribute medications and anesthetic agents to staff working with study animals.
  • Examine incoming animals and provide necessary treatment.
  • Report epidemiological data on in-house animal health to the IACUC.
  • Participate in IACUC meetings and vivarium-related committees to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Investigate and generate reports for incidents involving vendors, animal health, and animal welfare.
  • Mentor and provide technical training for animal care staff, animal health technicians, and research staff.
  • Prepare and participate in PIADC vivarium inspections.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.
  • Be licensed to practice in one state within the United States.
  • Have a minimum of 1 year of clinical experience with large animals (swine and cattle).
  • Have experience working with experimentally infected animals.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be able to receive and maintain a Personal Security Level 3 (PSL-3) clearance and participate in the Occupational Health/Safety Programs.
  • Pass a government background investigation (NAC), employment physical, and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Participate in E-Verify, a service of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA), to verify the identity and employment eligibility of persons hired to work in the United States.
